Updates

MEASLEs Vaccines

In light of an increase in measles infections, we have been receiving questions about measles vaccination. We do have measles vaccinations at Meadowbrook and they are free to eligible patients. Of note, children will get two doses of the MMR vaccine with their regular vaccinations: the first at 12 months and the second at 4 to 6 years.

Others who should get the vaccine:

  •  Babies 6 to 11 months who will be travelling to countries with measles disease should get the MMR vaccine early for measles protection. These children will need 2 more doses of the vaccine at the routine times (12 months and 4 to 6 years). Children between 1 and 4 who will be travelling to these countries can get their second dose early.

  • Older children and teens who have not been immunized should get 2 doses of the vaccine.

  • Adults born in 1970 or later who have not been immunized should get 2 doses of the vaccine. If you are not sure if you have had a second dose, you can be immunized again anyways. Most people born before 1970 will have had measles and mumps disease when they were younger (before vaccination was widely available) and will be protected from natural infection. If you know you did not have measles disease and have not been immunized, you can get 1 dose of the vaccine.

  • Adults born in 1957 to 1969 who have not been immunized should get 1 dose of the vaccine for protection against rubella. Most people born before 1957 will have had rubella disease and will be protected from natural infection.

  • Health care workers born in 1957 or later need 2 doses of the MMR vaccine. Those born before 1957 need 1 dose.

How to get your vaccine:

  • Book an immunization appointment online or by phone with our nurse, indicating measles vaccination in your reason for booking.

  • You can choose to come in to the office or book virtually, however you are most comfortable. If you think an in person assessment is needed, please book in-person.

At our medical clinic, we believe in creating a safe and welcoming environment for all our patients. As such, masks are generally optional for all visitors to our clinic. However, we kindly ask that patients who are experiencing symptoms of illness, or who have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, wear a mask for the duration of their visit. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us to prevent the spread of illness and to protect the health of all those who enter our facility.

  • As of June 2023, pharmacists can prescribe medications for minor ailments, such as skin conditions, allergies and minor infections. As your primary care providers, we strive to be available to you for all of your primary care needs, so please consider consulting with us first as we are aware of your full medical history and can perform a confidential history and exam as needed. We know that this is not always possible, thus if you consult with your pharmacist for a minor ailment and your condition does not improve, please follow up with your provider.

For refills of your prescriptions, please plan ahead to have a discussion with your primary care provider for refills as prescription medications require monitoring for effectiveness and safety. If you require an emergency refill from your pharmacist, please book a follow up appointment with your primary care provider so we can plan a mutually agreed upon safe refill frequency.
